The project consists of photovoltaic panels on canopies that cover approximately 200 parking spaces at the Lafayette BART station. These panels produce a combined 1 megawatt of electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Construction began on the project in February of 2017, with the panels operational by early spring of 2017. SolarCity operates the project and sells the power produced to BART under a 20-year contract with the transportation district. The project produces more power than the Lafayette BART station consumes, with the additional power going to serve other uses on the BART system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/beiconstruction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BART_logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1027\" src=\"http:\/\/beiconstruction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BART_logo-300x45.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"45\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beiconstruction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BART_logo-300x45.jpg 300w, https:\/\/beiconstruction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/BART_logo.jpg 686w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>A new look for parking lots<\/strong><br \/>\nSolarCity chose to partner with BEI on the project. The BEI team performed the AC and DC electrical work, including electrical and underground construction. Sunny Lafayette, California, is home to other similar SolarCity projects involving BEI, such as one that included installing similar panels in parking lots at 4 area schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople often associate PV panels with rooftop installations,\u201d says BEI President Mike Rantz. \u201cBut solar canopies are a very effective option, too, especially for parking lots. They can turn vast parking areas into energy generating space. Plus, the canopies provide some protection from sun and rain to parking areas.
